Restaurant-Style Naan Made Easy: No Tandoor Needed! Fluffy Flatbreads in Minutes

Naan, the iconic Indian flatbread, is more than just a sidekick to your favorite curry. Its pillowy texture, golden brown char, and subtle smoky flavor elevate any meal. Today, we'll embark on a journey to recreate authentic naan in your kitchen – no tandoor oven required! So, gather your ingredients, let the dough rise, and prepare to experience the magic of naan firsthand.

Ingredients:

  • 1 or 1/2 cups (180g) all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup (120ml) plain yogurt

  • 1/4 cup (60ml) warm water

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro (optional)

Activate the Yeast:

Mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Combine the Dough:

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, and melted butter. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.

Knead to Perfection:

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little more flour if the dough feels too sticky.

Rise and Shine:

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.

Divide and Shape:

Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a roughly 6-inch round, about 1/4 inch thick.

Get Cooking:

Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Brush the naan with a little water and carefully lay it on the hot surface. Cook for 1-2 minutes per side, watching for golden brown spots and slight puffing.

Optional Flare:

Brush the cooked naan with melted butter and sprinkle with chopped cilantro for an extra flavor.

Serve with Love:

Enjoy your warm, freshly baked naan with your favorite Indian dishes, and dips, or simply savor it on its own. Every bite is a testament to the simple yet divine artistry of naan.

Thank You 🙂
