How to Make an Egg Roll

An egg roll is a favorite snake worldwide and can be eaten at any time of the day. First appearing in Asian cuisine, their fame has spread as golden, crispy rolls filled with a savory mixture of vegetables and protein, working as appetizers for parties or even a satisfying meal.

This recipe takes you through the easy steps to make home egg rolls out of simple ingredients easily. Let's get moving!

Egg Roll Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 cup shredded cabbage.
  • 1/2 cup grated carrots.
  • 1/2 cup cooked chicken.
  • 2 green onions.
  • finely chopped 2 cloves garlic.
  • minced 1 tablespoon soy sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil.
  • 1 teaspoon ginger.
  • Grated salt and pepper to taste.
  • Egg roll wrappers.
  • 1 egg or whatever you required.
  • Vegetable oil (for frying).

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Filling:

  • In a large skillet, heat the sesame oil over medium heat.
  • Add the garlic and ginger, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Add the shredded cabbage, grated carrots, and green onions.
  • Cook until vegetables are slightly softened, for 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Add the cooked chicken, if you're using any, add this.
  • Stir in the soy sauce and cook for two more minutes.
  • Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • Remove from the heat and cool the filling.

2. Assemble the Egg Rolls:

  • Set an egg roll wrapper on your work surface so that one of the corners faces you, like a diamond.
  • Use 2-3 tablespoons of filling and place it in the middle of the wrapper. Then, fold the bottom corner up over the filling, pulling it snugly.
  • Fold the left and right corners in towards the center, again snuggly.
  • Roll the wrapper up toward the top corner, keeping the wrap tight and compact.
  • Brush the top corner with the beaten egg to seal the roll.
  • Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

3. Fry the Egg Rolls:

  • Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large, deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully add a few egg rolls to the hot oil, ensuring not to crowd the skillet.
  • Fry the egg rolls for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the egg rolls and place them on paper towels to drain.
  • Repeat with the remaining egg rolls.

4. Serve:

Serve the egg rolls hot, with your favorite dipping sauce like sweet and sour sauce, soy sauce, or spicy mustard.

5. Tips and Variations:

Vegetarian Option:

Omit the meat and use more vegetables, like bell peppers, mushrooms, or bean sprouts, to make a vegetarian egg roll.

Baking Alternative:

For a healthier option, brush the assembled egg rolls with a bit of oil and bake them in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes or until golden and crispy.

Freezing:

Uncooked egg rolls can be frozen for later use. Put it in a single layer on the baking sheet to freeze, then transfer it into a freezer bag. After few minutes  take to fry.
