Falafel is a popular Middle Eastern dish made from ground chickpeas or fava beans, mixed with herbs and spices, then deep-fried into small patties or balls. It's commonly served in pita bread with vegetables, sauces like tahini or hummus, or as part of a mezze platter.
How to Make Falafel ?
Ingredients:
- 1 cup dried chickpeas (soaked overnight).
- 1 small onion.
- chopped2-3 cloves garlic.
- minced1/4 cup fresh parsley.
- chopped1/4 cup fresh cilantro.
- chopped1 tsp ground cumin.
- 1 tsp ground coriander.
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper.
- 1 tsp salt.
- 1/2 tsp baking powder.
- 2-3 tbsp. all-purpose flour
- Oil for frying.
Instructions:
Prepare Chickpeas: Soak chickpeas overnight in water. Drain and rinse well.
Blend Ingredients: In a food processor, combine chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, pepper, and salt. Pulse until you achieve a coarse, grainy texture.
Form Mixture: Transfer the mixture to a bowl, add baking powder and flour, and mix well. Let the mixture rest for 30 minutes to help bind it.
Shape Falafel: Form the mixture into small balls or patties using your hands. If the mixture is too loose, add a bit more flour.
Fry Falafel: Heat oil in a deep pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the falafel in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
Serve: Serve hot, in pita bread with vegetables and sauces, or as part of a salad or mezze platter.
Tips for Perfect Falafel:
- Consistency: Ensure the mixture is coarse, not smooth, to maintain the traditional texture.
- Binding: Resting the mixture helps it bind better, preventing it from falling apart during frying.
- Baking Alternative: For a healthier version, brush falafel with oil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, turning halfway.
