Chilli Fish - A Restaurant-Style Delight at Home!
Craving that delicious chilli fish you get at restaurants? Well, guess what? You can recreate that magic right in your own kitchen! This recipe is surprisingly simple and delivers a restaurant-worthy dish that's sure to tantalize your taste buds.
Ingredients:
For the fish:
500 gms fish fillets (any white fish like cod, basa, or tilapia will work)
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
1/2 tsp black pepper powder
1 lemon, juiced
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup cornflour
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
For the chilli sauce:
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped
2 green chillies, slit (adjust based on your spice preference)
1 red bell pepper, chopped (optional)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 inch ginger, minced
1 tbsp tomato ketchup
1 tbsp chilli sauce
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp vinegar
1/2 tsp sugar
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Marinate the fish: Cut the fish fillets into bite-sized cubes. In a bowl, combine the fish cubes with soy sauce, ginger-garlic paste, black pepper powder, and lemon juice. Let this marinate for at least 15 minutes, while you prepare the sauce.
- Prepare the batter: In another bowl, whisk together the egg, cornflour, and all-purpose flour until you get a smooth batter with a slightly thick consistency.
- Cook the fish: Heat oil in a pan or wok over medium-high heat. Dip each marinated fish piece into the batter and carefully coat it. Gently slide the coated fish pieces into the hot oil. Fry them for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the fried fish pieces from the pan and drain them on paper towels.
- Make the chilli sauce: In the same pan you used to fry the fish (with a little extra oil if needed), saute the onions, green chillies, and bell pepper (if using) for a couple of minutes until softened. Add the ginger and garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Simmer the sauce: Now, pour in the tomato ketchup, chilli sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar. Season with salt to taste. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Assemble the dish: Add the fried fish pieces back into the simmering chilli sauce. Gently toss everything together to coat the fish evenly. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves (optional) and serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.
Tips:
You can adjust the spice level of this dish by using less or more green chillies.
If you don't have cornflour, you can substitute it with all-purpose flour.
Don't overcrowd the pan when frying the fish. This will lower the oil temperature and make the fish soggy.
Feel free to add other vegetables like carrots or green beans to the chilli sauce for extra color and crunch.
This chilli fish recipe is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. So, fire up your stove, and get ready to enjoy a delicious and satisfying meal!
